APC Will Survive Beyond Tinubu’s Presidency — National Chairman Yilwatda

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed confidence that the ruling party will remain strong even after President Bola Tinubu leaves office.
Yilwatda made the assertion on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television, where he addressed concerns about the APC’s future following Tinubu’s eventual exit from power. He stressed that the party’s survival is not tied to any single individual, noting that it existed and thrived even before Tinubu became president.
According to him, the APC possesses the structures, experience, and leadership depth required to endure beyond Tinubu’s presidency.
“Of course, the party will survive after Tinubu. Before him, the APC survived; with him, the APC survived. Even when he was not president, his influence was evident,” Yilwatda said.
He recalled Tinubu’s pivotal role in the formation of the APC ahead of the 2015 general elections, despite not holding executive office at the time. Yilwatda also referenced the reconciliation committee set up by late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 to resolve internal party disputes, which Tinubu chaired.
“You will recall that in 2019, President Buhari constituted a reconciliation committee to prepare the party for the elections, and it was headed by Bola Tinubu,” he said. “When he submitted the report, he said he had reconciled the numbers needed to win the election. And indeed, we won.”
The APC chairman emphasized that Tinubu’s ability to unite party factions and mobilise support was crucial to the party’s 2019 electoral victory, even though he was not president at the time.
Looking ahead, Yilwatda said Tinubu’s influence would continue after his tenure, describing him as a national leader whose experience and political network would remain valuable to the party.
“He will come in as a former president, offering leadership, experience, and that scientific political approach he is known for,” he added.
Yilwatda also dismissed claims that Tinubu would struggle to secure support in northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. He pointed to the August 2025 by-elections as evidence of the APC’s growing acceptance in the region.
“Before the by-elections, critics said APC would not win in the North, using the slogan ‘anything but APC.’ But the results proved otherwise,” he said.
According to him, the APC recorded victories in several northern states, including Kebbi, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa, Kogi, and Niger, losing only one House of Assembly seat.
He concluded by noting that the party’s successes cut across ethnic and religious lines, reflecting broad-based national support.
