Sanwo-Olu Confirms Eight Dead, 13 Rescued in GNI Building Fire

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has confirmed that eight people lost their lives while 13 others were rescued following the deadly fire outbreak at the GNI building in Balogun Market.
The governor said preliminary findings revealed widespread violations of building regulations by traders in the market, prompting the state government to order a complete regeneration of Balogun Market to restore its aesthetics and proper spatial planning.
Sanwo-Olu condemned what he described as reckless and unacceptable flouting of the state’s building codes, noting that repeated disregard for regulations often leads to devastating consequences.
“In the last one hour, I’ve gone round the streets within the market. From a non-professional assessment, it is clear that most of the buildings here are completely distressed,” he said. “However, we will carry out a professional assessment to confirm these observations. We will not sit back and allow people to do as they please. Lives have been lost, properties destroyed, and livelihoods shattered.”
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that a Help Desk has been set up at the scene for families searching for missing relatives believed to have been trapped in the building.
He explained that all information received would be verified and properly documented to compile a consolidated list of missing persons, which would assist ongoing rescue, recovery, and identification efforts.
Oke-Osanyintolu added that emergency responders would continue to search the site thoroughly to ensure no one remains trapped under the rubble.
He reaffirmed LASEMA’s commitment to working closely with other emergency response, health, and security agencies to ensure a coordinated and orderly operation. He also urged members of the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency officials, and stay away from the incident area to allow responders to carry out their duties effectively.
