Atiku’s Aide Counters Akume’s Advice on Northern 2027 Presidency Ambitions

Published

on

Paul Ibe, spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly reacted to a recent statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.

Speaking on a TVC programme on Sunday, Akume advised Atiku and other northern political leaders to postpone their ambitions for the 2027 presidency and wait until 2031. Akume emphasized that it is still the turn of the South to produce the next president, while asserting that President Bola Tinubu would complete his second term.

However, Ibe has criticized Akume’s suggestion, asserting that it would unfairly disadvantage the North. He contended that the North has already experienced a six-year power deficit compared to the South in terms of political leadership.

In a sharp response via X, Ibe wrote:

“Where, then, does true equity and fairness reside? By the year 2027, the South will have enjoyed 17 years of leadership — eight years under Obasanjo, five years under Jonathan, and four years under Tinubu — while the North will have experienced only 11 years, with Yar’Adua serving three and Buhari eight. This results in a disparity of six years between the North and South, casting a shadow over the balance of power.”

Ibe further questioned whether Tinubu has proven himself worthy of a second term, stating:

“The power to elect and vote out their government lies firmly with the Nigerian people, entrusted to them upon the government’s ability to prove itself worthy of the people’s ballot. But has the Tinubu government demonstrated that it deserves to be re-elected? The answer, alas, is as clear as the heavens themselves — God forbid!”

This marks the latest exchange in the political discourse surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 elections and power balance debates, as the North considers its position in the evolving political landscape.

Caught in the middle: Ortom’s silent dance between two camps.

Published

There are growing questions about where Mr. Samuel Ortom, a former Governor of Benue State and a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), truly stands politically ahead of 2027.

Ortom was a key figure in the divisions within the PDP before the 2023 general elections and was widely associated with support for Mr. Peter Obi, who finished third in that contest. More recently, however, he has publicly expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The latest discussion began after a visit by Mr. Peter Obi to Benue State. Reports indicate that a vehicle said to belong to Ortom was used to receive Obi at the Air Force Base airport in Makurdi. It is not clear who authorized the use of the vehicle, and Ortom has not commented publicly on the matter.

During the same visit, Obi was reportedly prevented from travelling to Yelewata, where he had intended to condole with families affected by violence. Obi’s team attributed the blockage to supporters of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The Governor’s spokesman, Sir Tersoo Kula, denied any involvement by the Governor. He suggested the incident may have been staged to damage the Governor’s reputation, or that it could have resulted from disagreements within Obi’s own support base.

Ortom has not issued a statement clarifying his position on the 2027 elections or on the vehicle in question. Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
