Bandits Claim Lives of Three Soldiers and Two Vigilantes in Nasarawa

Katapka community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State was engulfed in fear following the reported killing of three soldiers and two members of a vigilante group by bandits on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on February 1, 2024, when unidentified gunmen attacked Katapka and Okudu communities, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira. In response, the Nigerian Army deployed personnel to maintain law and order in the area.

However, despite efforts by the military to restore calm, the bandits launched another assault on Tuesday afternoon, leading to the deaths of three soldiers and two vigilantes.

Abdullahi Aliyu-Tashas, the Chairman of Toto Local Government Area, expressed sadness over the untimely demise of the security personnel, describing the incident as tragic. He explained that the suspected bandits ambushed the military patrol, resulting in the fatalities.

The state government has intervened in the matter, deploying additional security operatives to prevent further escalation of violence and maintain law and order in the area.

Meanwhile, the Bassa Cultural Development Union, representing an ethnic group in the region, called upon Governor Abdullahi Sule to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks. In a statement signed by its chairman, Emmanuel Gbaji, the union extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged authorities to ensure peace is restored in Toto Local Government Area.
