Panic and chaos erupted in the Oja Oba area of Ilorin, Kwara State, as an accident involving a bus from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and commercial motorcyclists resulted in injuries to several people. The incident occurred around 8:40 am when the NCS convoy, transporting inmates to the Kwara State High Court, lost control in the Isale Oja area, colliding with motorcyclists.
According to the NCS, the accident happened when hoodlums attempted to break into the custodial vehicles’ convoy to free high-profile inmates, including AbdulAzeez Adegbola (Tani Olohun), who were being taken to court. As a result, residents protested the incident, during which an NCS vehicle was vandalized. The police swiftly evacuated the inmates from the damaged vehicle.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the accident, stating that speeding and road users’ refusal to yield to emergency vehicles caused the collision. Four individuals sustained serious injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital, with two already treated and discharged, while four remain under medical care.
The Motorcycle Riders Association called for justice for their members, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. The NCS, in its statement, described the incident as a premeditated attempt by hoodlums to break into the custodial convoy, leading to injuries among both motorcyclists and NCS personnel. The situation remains under investigation, highlighting the need for vigilance and proper adherence to traffic rules for all road users.**
