Dogara’: A Lone Voice In The Wilderness

Published

on

By JONATHAN

Hon. Yakubu Dogara, is a lawyer who profidence has assisted into power, rised to the position of number 4, the Speaker of the Nigeria House of Representatives from a Christian minority of Bauchi state.
A deep silence that greeted his unwitting decision to go against his Christian constituents, even against the thinking of the majority of the people of Tafawa Barewa, Bogoro and Dass federal constituency of Bauchi state attest to this uncircumspection.
As it’s stands, Dogara is on his own!
While his co traveler at the Northern APC Christians forum, Babachir Lawal who backs out, had last week settles on equity, fairness and justice in which Peter Obi of the Labour Party represents to the admiration of his constituents, Dogara settles for a Fulani Muslim back to back, as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the PDP represents under the current arrangement.

Dogara, Speaker of the 8th House of Representatives had shouted down the high heavens when Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress, APC settled on Sen Kashim Shettima, former Borno State governor as his vice presidential candidate.
Then Dogara had labelled the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket as an anti Christians in which he alongside Babachir Lawal and forty other Christian groups in the North kicked against it.

“The adoption Muslim-Muslim ticket by the APC for the 2023 presidential election is a fruitless political effort that has been doomed to end in spectacular failure”, Dogara said.

As a lawyer and a senior legislator who rose from the crass to the peak of his legislative career, Dogara is expected to provide a strong opposition against the Muslim-Muslim ticket as it flouted the federal character principle of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, or according to him: “Same faith ticket does not align with the vision of a united Nigeria because it does not promote a collective sense of belongingness”

Most critics believe that the PDP presidential Fulani ticket and Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket represent a threat to the Nigerian unity as they are inimical to the essence of the federal character principle anchor on a united and prosperous Nigeria by accommodating the various ethnic, religious and geographical diversity of federation.

While Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket flagrantly threw to the dustbins, the Federal Character principle, Atiku attempts to plays into the senses of most Nigerians with his unifier kite.

With his last week’s unwittingly thumb towards Atiku, Dogara’s ‘defender of the Christian faith’, just collapsed on his face.
Recall that Dogara, one of those who also former Vice President Atiku Abubakar walked against ex President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 can not in good faith justify the succession of Northern Fulani Muslim to another Northern Fulani Muslim and convince his constituents that his criteria was muted out of selfish political interest.
Dogara must be made to answer questions on where is the justice, fairness and equity in the succession of a Muslim Fulani to another Muslim Fulani – That is Atiku succeeding Buhari?
Even at the Nicon Luxury hotel, Abuja venue of the Northern Christians submit last October, the Plateau state delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Youths wing, Pastor Nehemiah Michael Mawan had walked out on Dogara on this treacherous tendency.
Pastor Nehemiah Michael who drove back to Jos to protest what he discribes as “Dogara’s plans to use the submit to negotiate for a 2023 bargain even if it were going to be against the Christian interest”.
“Where is the justice and equity the Dogara claims he was fighting for? He would have looked the way of the Integrity Governors and perhaps joined forces with them”.

Indeed, this is one fight Dogara could have done well to stay clear of. Taking christians’ liberties for granted, Dogara was all along praying to be picked as Tinubu’s Vice Presidential candidate, as is now being alleged.

If he were not trapped by his egotistical aspiration, he would have borrowed a leaf from the G5 governors who are challenging the flaws of their party.
Dogara is playing a lonely card, an imminent danger to the Nigerian political enterprise Northern Christians should be aware of.
What justification is Dogara presenting to his followers whom they had kicked the Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket and turn back to back a Muslim Fulanization ticket?

Babachir Lawal whose endorsement of Peter Obi of the Labour Party was earlier criticised by Dogara has fared even much better in this fight for the political rights of Northern Christians.

Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government if the Federation, SGF came unburdened to the fight. His objectives are much clearer, the unwritten principle of power rotation between North and South.

Unwittingly, Dogara’s assessment of the leading presidential candidates and their chances in the 2023 presidential election begged for circumspect because both Atiku’s PDP and Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket present a dilemma of between the devil and the deep, blue sea to Nigerians, while Obidatti’s Labour Party offers the real alternative, a position Lawal ably amplified and enjoy Northern Christians, the leadership of Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the Nigerian youths whose desire is to take their political destiny from the present crass of greedy leaders.

The President of the Nigerian Youth Congress, Jethro Annum, and the NYCN State Chairman of Niger State, Ambassador Abdullahi Muhammed Ishaq, who spoke on behalf of the NYCN North Central Chairmen, described the NCDC as a catalyst for development.

They said the Commission’s 20-year development plan reflects the need for long-term planning and aligns with the broader development vision of President Tinubu for the country.

Similarly, the Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative (EUYI), in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Danesi Momoh, and the North Central Youth Mobilization and Sensitization (NOCYMS), led by Hon. The youth leaders described the initiative as timely and forward-looking, stressing that young people and students must remain an integral part of conversations about the future of the region.

They noted that the North Central is home to millions of young Nigerians whose energy, skills, ideas and innovation can contribute significantly to the region’s economic and social transformation when provided with the right opportunities.

“Students and young people are not only beneficiaries of development; we are also partners in building the future we desire. Any 20-year development plan for the North Central must therefore give serious attention to education, skills development, employment, entrepreneurship, technology and youth participation,” they said.

The youth representatives further assured the NCDC of their readiness to work closely with the Commission and other relevant stakeholders to advance initiatives that will create meaningful opportunities for students and young people across the region.

2027: Stay Off Imo State, Lawyers Warn Wike

Published

Imo Lawyers for the Defence of Democracy have called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to stop what it termed public attacks on Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, saying political disagreements should be resolved through democratic dialogue and constitutional means. The group made the call in a statement signed by its Secretary, Ifeoma Chukwunyere on Friday, September 18, 2026, amid what it described as increasingly personal exchanges between Wike and Uzodinma over political developments within the All Progressives Congress. The lawyers said the APC Governors’ Forum had rejected what they described as Wike’s “Rainbow Coalition” political arrangement, arguing that the disagreement should be addressed with the forum rather than through personal attacks on Uzodinma.According to the group, the forum’s position was based on concerns that the political arrangement could weaken the APC or create divided loyalty within the party.“We recognise the constitutional right of every Nigerian, including public officials and political actors, to express political opinions, criticise policies and participate in political activities,” the group said.“However, that freedom must not become a licence for personal attacks, intimidation or unnecessary escalation.”The lawyers said Uzodinma, as the governor of Imo State, should be allowed to discharge his responsibilities without political exchanges creating tension capable of affecting the peace and stability of the state. They urged Wike to desist from further public comments concerning the governor, insisting that political disagreements should focus on policies, programmes, political positions and verifiable facts rather than personal exchanges. The group also warned political actors against turning Imo State into a battleground for political supremacy.“Imo State is not a battlefield for political supremacy. Its people have the constitutional right to choose their leaders and determine their political future without undue interference, intimidation or external pressure,” it said. The lawyers further called on political parties, leaders, supporters and media platforms to avoid inflammatory language that could provoke confrontation. They urged Uzodinma to continue to operate within the Constitution and the laws of the country, while allowing relevant political and legal institutions to handle legitimate disagreements. The group also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to encourage restraint among political actors, particularly in relation to the dispute between Wike and Uzodinma.Addressing Wike directly, the lawyers said: “Mr. Minister, Imo State belongs to its people. You are not from Imo, so stay off Imo.”They stressed that disagreements over political strategies, elections, alliances and political actors in the state should be settled through democratic debate and constitutional processes. The group said it would continue to monitor developments affecting constitutional governance, democratic participation, political freedom and peace in Imo State.“Our position is simple: Democracy must prevail. The Constitution must prevail. The rule of law must prevail,” the statement added.
