In its determination to tame the rising cases of drug abuse among Nigerian youths, a Non Governmental Organisation, the Grassroots Aide Initiatives, has embarked on awareness campaign programmes to educate Secondary School students on dangers of illicit drugs.
Leading the sensitisation campaign to Jalala Junior Secondary School, University of Ilorin premises in Kwara state, the Executive Director of the NGO, Dr. Kehinde Khadijat Kadiri, cautioned the youth against indulging in hard drugs and other illegal activities that could affect their future.
Dr. Kehinde Kadiri, who is a Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, also challenged governments at all levels, key stakeholders and relevant organisations to work towards controlling and eradicating illegal drugs in the society, stressing the need for effective policies to achieve the desired goals.
The Executive Director of the NGO also used the occasion to award scholarship to eight indigent and well behaved students of the school to inspire them to complete their education.
According to her, some of the indigent students have pulled out due to their inability to pay the school charges, pointing out that the Non Governmental Organisation paid for full academic session of all the beneficiaries.
Dr Kehinde Kadiri has therefore charged wealthy individuals, organisations and well-meaning members of the public to collaborate with the Organisation towards addressing the challenges facing the poor in the society and complementing government in tackling poverty.
The Executive Director of the NGO, however, pledged the commitment of the Organisation to continue to ensure better living of the people not only in grassroots but also assist young men and women in the immediate society to achieve better living.
