Officers from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command intervened on Thursday night, dispersing a violent protest sparked by an alleged killing of a fashion designer by a Department of State Services (DSS) operative. The incident injured several.
Reports suggest the conflict began when a customer introduced the DSS operative to the designer’s shop due to a disagreement over an unmet clothing delivery deadline. When colleagues of the fashion designer intervened, tensions escalated with the DSS agent.
The agent, after allegedly shooting and killing the designer, was apprehended and is currently detained at Wuse Market Police Station. A local trader described the unfolding situation, highlighting the intervention of other market vendors and the resultant shooting.
SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, clarified the events, explaining that after receiving a distress call, police officers were mobilized to handle the situation at Garki International Market. The confrontation involved a DSS officer and a tailor named Muhammad Habibu. The situation deteriorated when local youths angrily engaged with the DSS operative. Police intervened, ensuring public safety and restoring order. Some weapons from the incident have been recovered. The Commissioner of Police, FCT, Haruna Garba, reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and urged the public to utilize emergency lines when necessary.
The DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, also issued a statement, confirming the incident and the department’s ongoing investigation into the matter. The DSS assures the public of transparency and vows to take appropriate disciplinary actions if their personnel are found at fault.
