FCCPC’ll ensure protection of patients rights, says Irukera

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has promised to collaborate with healthcare providers towards ensuring adequate protection of the rights of patients as well as enhancing proper and adequate healthcare service delivery to the citizenry across the country.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Mr Babatunde Irukera, stated this on Monday at the unveiling of the “Patients Bill of Right” in public and private hospitals in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

According to him, there is a great disconnect between the patients and the healthcare service providers on the right of the patients.

He said the strategy to adopt is to ensure that healthcare providers are carried along in the signing of the bill and its domestication to enable it works effectively and efficiently for the good and benefits of the people.

Mr Irukera opined that the patients right bill would give the patients the opportunity to get the best treatment required in any health facility, while advising the patients to always use the available channels to register their grievances for prompt actions and attention.

In his remarks, Kwara state Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his deputy, Mr Kayode Alabi, commended the Commission for coming up with a bill to protect patients’ rights, saying the state government would collaborate with the Commission to ensure the success of the bill.

For his part, the Chief Medical Director, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Professor Abdullah Dasliva Yusuf, who was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Louis Odeigha, said the bill would help in ensuring sanity in the health sector.

In his comment, the Medical Director, LEAH Hospital Ilorin, Dr. Oyinloye Gregory, said the management of the health center would work harder to keep its obligations to the people, particularly patients.

Irukera led the Commission’s team to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Leah Health Centre and Anchormed Hospital for the domestication of Patients Bill of Rights.
