The Federal Government, through the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, has initiated measures to prevent the unauthorized leaking of sensitive government documents to the public.
Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, issued a memo dated February 19, 2024, expressing concern over the increasing instances of leaked official documents, describing them as embarrassing and unacceptable to the government.
The memo, identified as HCSF/3065/VI/189, highlights the urgent need for permanent secretaries to expedite the transition to digitalized workflow systems and ensure the effective deployment of the Enterprise Content Management Solution.
According to the memo, this transition will minimize physical contact with official documents, thereby curbing the rising incidence of document leaks and unauthorized circulation.
Permanent secretaries are also instructed to warn all staff members against leaking and circulating official information and documents, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.
In recent times, there has been a surge in the exposure of sensitive government documents in the public domain. Notable among these leaks include a memo from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, detailing plans to allocate allowances to members of the tripartite committee on the minimum wage. Another leaked memo purportedly outlined substantial subsidy allocations for Hajj from the office of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
These leaks have sparked outrage among Civil Society Organizations and organized labor, prompting calls for investigations into the allocations outlined in the leaked documents.
