By Najemo Francis, Sokoto

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has charged all APC controlled states to replicate the achievements of the federal government in their respective states in order to ensure the rapid development of the nation.

Tambuwal who was declaring open the Second Quarterly Meeting of Secretaries of Government of APC controlled states in Sokoto said that the nation was at the crossroads and that it was “our individual and collective responsibility to do what was required to move the nation forward.”

According to him, the present administration came into office when the country was in a very bad shape in many respects and that “every Nigerian has a responsibility to advance the cause of democracy and do all it takes to propel Nigeria to greater heights” and take its rightful place in the comity of nations.

He said that despite dwindling resources, the federal government had recorded significant achievements, particularly in the areas of security, job creation, agriculture, education and youth empowerment, among others.

He said that the meeting which is a follow-up to the one hosted by Lagos State in March would review progress on key issues in a bid to identify the problems and challenges confronting the states and find a lasting solution.

Tambuwal said that the meeting would foster the adoption of uniform peer review mechanism, monitoring and evaluation, sharing experiences and learning from one another, adding that the ones that conform to best practices would be replicated in all APC controlled states.

In his speech, the co- chairman of the progressive governors’ forum and Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, would share ideas on national critical issues and leadership strategies that would enrich national discourse.

He was represented by his SSG, Rufus Bature.

What MKA Will Do Differently

  1. Open rural roads to allow faster and deeper security response, while also improving the movement of agricultural products. The current government has focused on cosmetic projects that do not reflect the current challenges and realities of the state. The rural areas are the most hard hit by this terror and my government will focus on providing a targeted and holistic responses .
  2. To ensure deterrence, I will set up a committee of experienced legal minds to monitor and follow up the prosecution of criminals arrested by the police. I will also work with the State Assembly to further strengthen our anti-crime laws.
  3. Improve security intelligence by deepening collaboration with the clergy, traditional rulers, neighbouring states, and security agencies. I will also improve surveillance by building a command centre capable of 24-hour remote monitoring of critical and volatile areas of the state. The current government of Abia State under Alex Otti has delivered one such project with great results.
  4. Payment of salaries should not be a yardstick for measuring good governance. Salaries are simply workers’ entitlements for services rendered. To promote transparency, I will publish a public salary website showing the monthly status of salary payments.
  5. I will set up a committee tasked with ensuring Benue youths are fairly represented in federal government job recruitment exercises.
  6. In the area of sports, I will build astroturf football pitches across the state to encourage youth participation in sports. Additionally entrepreneurs will receive grants and low interest loans to grow.
  7. Agriculture is a business, and our farmers will be equipped with the training and infrastructure needed to carry out commercial farming. I will deploy my experience of running a rice factory over the last 10 years to transform agriculture into a profitable enterprise.
  8. Global cities are also entertaining cities. Benue has a large pool of talented entertainers, and I will set up an Entertainment Advisory Board to promote talent and grow the entertainment industry in the state.
