Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has emphasized the importance of revitalizing Nigeria’s refineries to alleviate pressure on the naira against the dollar. He expressed optimism that if the country ceases the importation of petroleum products and focuses on domestic refining, it would significantly reduce the strain on the nation’s foreign exchange reserves.
Speaking during a meeting with the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Turnaround Maintenance of Nigerian Refineries, led by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Governor Oborevwori underscored the need for urgent steps towards refurbishing the country’s refineries. He highlighted the potential economic benefits of local refining, including saving foreign exchange expenditure on fuel imports and boosting the nation’s economy.
Governor Oborevwori assured the committee of Delta State’s full support in facilitating their oversight function and urged swift action to address the challenges facing the refineries. He emphasized the seriousness of the committee’s assignment and expressed confidence in their ability to ensure the effective functioning of the refineries.
In response, Senator Ubah outlined the committee’s mandate, which includes addressing issues related to refinery rehabilitation, crude oil theft, and maximizing crude oil output. He emphasized the holistic nature of the committee’s work, covering upstream, downstream, Niger Delta affairs, and the welfare of host communities.
As part of their tradition, Senator Ubah conveyed the committee’s respect and appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for granting them the opportunity to engage with the state government on crucial matters concerning Nigeria’s oil industry and national development.
