Nollywood actress and producer Adanma Luke has made a heartfelt plea for forgiveness from Nigerians following the tragic boat accident in April that resulted in the deaths of actor John Odonwodo, also known as Junior Pope, and four other crew members.
In a video posted on her Instagram page on Monday, Luke expressed her deep sorrow and admitted to struggling with severe depression since the incident. She revealed that she feels like she is gradually losing her life and is in urgent need of prayers and support.
“I’m here to say that I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Nigerians. I’m sorry I took away your loved ones,” Luke said, addressing the criticism she has faced online. “I’m very sad. I’m so sad that this had to happen on my set. I’m not God; I didn’t plan for this. It has been destined to happen, but why me?”
Luke shared that she had been battling depression since the accident and has been unable to work or seek new projects. She also mentioned that while some people have accused her of going on vacation, she has been struggling to cope with the situation and supporting the families of the deceased.
“I did not even know what depression was until this incident happened. I’m gradually losing my life. I regret a lot of things and I don’t even know how to reach out to people for jobs,” she said. “People are saying I went on vacation, but I’ve been indoors doing nothing and still trying to support the families of the victims.”
She clarified that the location where the accident occurred was selected based on assurances from her team that it was safe. Luke had requested a better location for the film shoot and was informed that the area was regularly used for such purposes without incident.
“I asked for a better location, and they took me there. The first time I visited, I asked about life jackets, and I was told it was a common practice there. I wasn’t the first person to shoot there,” Luke explained.
Following the accident, the Actors Guild of Nigeria imposed a ban on actors participating in any films produced by Luke until further notice.
