“Kano State Deputy Governor’s Office Disputes Claims of Unfulfilled Promise for Eye Surgeries”
By Milcah Tanimu
The Kano State Deputy Governor’s Office has officially countered a report published by Solacebase Newspaper that alleged Deputy Governor Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo failed to honor his promise to sponsor 52 indigent patients for eye surgery. In a statement issued by the Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, the report was described as “misleading” and “unfounded.”
Key points from the refutation statement include:
1. **Denial of Promise:** The Deputy Governor’s office clarified that Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo never made any promise to sponsor 52 indigent patients for eye surgery. The report’s claim was based on an unverified tweet from an unofficial Twitter handle attributed to the Deputy Governor.
2. **Lack of Official Confirmation:** The investigation into the alleged promise was found to lack a basis since there was no official press release or statement from the Deputy Governor’s office confirming such a commitment.
3. **Previous Eye Screening Initiative:** The Deputy Governor’s office highlighted a previous initiative where over 500 individuals in Gwarzo Local Government Area (LGA) and its surrounding areas received free mobile eye screenings. This initiative was a collaborative effort between the Kano State Primary Healthcare and Management Board and the Makkah Specialist Eye Hospital. The statement from the Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary in July 2023 mentioned this eye screening program but did not include any promise to sponsor 52 patients for surgery.
4. **Facilitation, Not Sponsorship:** The Deputy Governor’s involvement in the eye screening initiative was clarified as facilitating the mobilization of patients from Gwarzo LGA to the Makkah Specialist Eye Hospital in Kano Metropolis. The statement emphasized that he did not have any link with the sponsorship of the patients.
5. **Call to Disregard the Report:** The statement urged the general public to disregard the misleading report, suggesting that it may be the work of mischief makers seeking to damage the Deputy Governor’s reputation, who is described as a person of remarkable integrity.
6. **Commitment to Economic Development and Welfare:** The statement concluded by reaffirming the state government’s dedication to enhancing the economic development and welfare of Kano State citizens.
In summary, the Deputy Governor’s office refuted the claim that he promised to sponsor 52 indigent patients for eye surgery, citing a lack of official confirmation and providing information about a previous eye screening initiative that did not include such a promise. The statement aimed to clarify the Deputy Governor’s role in facilitating the eye screening but not sponsoring the surgeries.

Caught in the middle: Ortom’s silent dance between two camps.
There are growing questions about where Mr. Samuel Ortom, a former Governor of Benue State and a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), truly stands politically ahead of 2027.
Ortom was a key figure in the divisions within the PDP before the 2023 general elections and was widely associated with support for Mr. Peter Obi, who finished third in that contest. More recently, however, he has publicly expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The latest discussion began after a visit by Mr. Peter Obi to Benue State. Reports indicate that a vehicle said to belong to Ortom was used to receive Obi at the Air Force Base airport in Makurdi. It is not clear who authorized the use of the vehicle, and Ortom has not commented publicly on the matter.
During the same visit, Obi was reportedly prevented from travelling to Yelewata, where he had intended to condole with families affected by violence. Obi’s team attributed the blockage to supporters of Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The Governor’s spokesman, Sir Tersoo Kula, denied any involvement by the Governor. He suggested the incident may have been staged to damage the Governor’s reputation, or that it could have resulted from disagreements within Obi’s own support base.
Ortom has not issued a statement clarifying his position on the 2027 elections or on the vehicle in question. Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
