The Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed their trust and confidence in the Nigerian judiciary. This statement comes in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld the victory of President Bola Tinubu from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25 presidential election. The Supreme Court dismissed appeals filed by PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, challenging Tinubu’s victory.
The PDP Governors’ Forum convened in Abuja to discuss this matter and related issues. After the meeting, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, addressed the press. He emphasized their faith in the judiciary’s ability to deliver justice in political and other cases pending before the courts.
Governor Mohammed expressed concern about the disqualification of PDP candidates in Plateau State based on the same grounds where the Supreme Court had set precedents on pre-election issues. The forum urged the apex court to ensure that the legal precedents are maintained without distortion.
Additionally, the PDP governors vowed to reposition and strengthen the party, making it a viable opposition political force that can effectively advocate for democracy, good governance, and accountability in Nigeria.
On economic matters, the PDP Governors’ Forum called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in stabilizing the naira, controlling inflation, addressing unemployment issues, and providing relief to the Nigerian populace.
The meeting was attended by several governors, including Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, Delta State Governor Sheriff Orohwedor, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, among others. Members of the PDP National Working Committee, including the acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, were also present at the gathering.
