Kwara State University is to commence a General Course in Japanese language to further open the students to foreign languages.
The programme which will commence in this academic session will join other foreign languages of French and Arabic the students have been exposed to in the institution.
Briefing journalists on Monday at the Council Chamber of the University on the seventh convocation and tenth year anniversary of the university, the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor AbdulRasheed Na’Allah said this would enable the students to understand more the dynamics and diversity of the world.
He described Japan as a country without raw materials but leveraged on its human resources to grow the country, saying that the strength in Japan in developing all facets of its economy should be a template for Nigeria to follow regarding the abundant human resources the country (Nigeria) is blessed with.
Professor Na’Allah added that already the University had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Japanese University on transfer of knowledge, while the University has also agreed with certain Japanese industries on how to develop biofuel in Nigeria.
On security, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that through the establishment of Advanced Military Studies by the University, the University is determined to “develop intellectual ability of the military personnel to adopt sophisticated intellectually articulated methods” to fight terrorism and other crimes confronting the nation instead of engaging in physical fight.
Professor Na’Allah also stated that a Professor of the University recently won a grant of twenty one million naira to develop drones that would monitor oil pipelines and curb oil crimes in the country.
Also, the VC said the University is to graduate one thousand , one hundred and ninety six students in the 2018/2019 academic session.
Out of this number, twenty five students would be awarded with first class degrees, five hundred and ninety two second class Upper, five hundred and thirty three Second Class Lower, and forty six pass.
Professor Na’Allah said the Institution which started with five hundred students now has a population of fifteen thousand students, describing the institution as a University with the most stable academic calendar in Nigeria.
According to him, in academic pursuits, the university has gone far in areas of studies that are not common, especially in tourism, Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering, pointing out that the university is the first to run the programmes in Nigeria.
