Lagos PDP Extols Resilient and Tolerant Residents on Democracy Day

The Lagos State Chapter of the PDP extends its admiration to the residents of the state for their unwavering resilience and remarkable tolerance since the restoration of democracy in 1999. In a message commemorating the anniversary of Democracy Day on Monday in Lagos, Mr. Akeem Amode, the PDP Publicity Secretary, expressed this commendation.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari formally declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, paying homage to the late Chief M.K.O Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election who tragically lost his life while in detention. This declaration followed years of advocacy by civil society groups demanding the recognition of Abiola’s contributions.

Amode acknowledged that despite the state’s ongoing pursuit of the complete realization of the dividends of democracy represented by Abiola and the June 12, 1993 elections, Lagos has faced significant challenges. This includes the turbulent “June 12 riot” that ensued after the election was annulled, resulting in the loss of lives among numerous residents.
