LG polls: no nose mask, no voting, electoral officers insist
Some voters at the Okerube Ward B Polling Unit (PU) 025 were sent back to get their nose masks before being accredited to vote in the ongoing election into Local Government Councils in Lagos. Our correspondent reports that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), had made it a mandatory condition for voters seeking to exercise their rights to vote. The nose masks are a major health facility to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.Alhaji Kabiru Omotosho, a voter, who was turned back, said he was not angry over the directive.“The officers did right by ensuring that COVID-19 protocols are adhered to.“I was asked to go back; I don’t know how and why I forgot to bring my nose mask. May be I was anxious and excited to vote.“The officials did right by reminding us. The election is going as it should,” he said.Mrs Idiat Ajibike, a business woman, told Our correspondent that she didn’t plan to buy a nose mask but was forced to, as there was no choice.“If not that I just want to vote, I would have just gone back. I don’t like the fact that I must buy something against my wish.“Walking back home is not an option because my place is far from here,” she said.An electoral officer, who preferred anonymity, said that there was enough publicity about the need for voters to come with their nose masks.“This is typical Nigerians’ attitude. They don’t pay attention. By now, we all should be used to using this nose mask all the time.“Imagine if there are no security agents around, some of them will insist that we must allow them to vote without it,” she said.Malam Abdurasak Isah, who has a kiosk nearby, told Our correspondent that business was booming with many people rushing to buy nose masks.“I will soon run out of stock. If I knew there will be high demand, I would have bought plenty, but I am glad I made sales. I have had these nose masks for months now.“I am enjoying the patronage,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that turnout has been slow, with many Lagos residents going about their normal activities unperturbed.
One such resident, Mrs Olaseni Idowu, a food vendor, said that she cooked so that electoral officers won’t get hungry while working.
“I know that sales will be good today; a lot of people won’t cook today, so I want to take advantage of today.
“Hunger is not friendly; some of us have to cook,” she said.

Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, at the 75th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) in Abuja on Monday, the President said the government is addressing key challenges facing businesses under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said the administration is focused not only on the volume of investment attracted but also on its impact on employment, skills development, technology transfer and local sourcing.
“We are interested not only in the amount of capital that comes into Nigeria, but in what that capital does here,” he said.
The President also praised NBC’s continued expansion of production capacity, including new production lines in Oyo and Kano states, describing such investments as vital to strengthening Nigeria’s industrial base.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving policies, infrastructure and regulations to support businesses, while urging the private sector to complement government efforts through investment, innovation and job creation.
Tinubu further highlighted the importance of human capital development, commending NBC’s Supply Chain Academy for training over 1,400 young Nigerians and supporting women’s empowerment and community development initiatives.

Caught in the middle: Ortom’s silent dance between two camps.
There are growing questions about where Mr. Samuel Ortom, a former Governor of Benue State and a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), truly stands politically ahead of 2027.
Ortom was a key figure in the divisions within the PDP before the 2023 general elections and was widely associated with support for Mr. Peter Obi, who finished third in that contest. More recently, however, he has publicly expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The latest discussion began after a visit by Mr. Peter Obi to Benue State. Reports indicate that a vehicle said to belong to Ortom was used to receive Obi at the Air Force Base airport in Makurdi. It is not clear who authorized the use of the vehicle, and Ortom has not commented publicly on the matter.
During the same visit, Obi was reportedly prevented from travelling to Yelewata, where he had intended to condole with families affected by violence. Obi’s team attributed the blockage to supporters of Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The Governor’s spokesman, Sir Tersoo Kula, denied any involvement by the Governor. He suggested the incident may have been staged to damage the Governor’s reputation, or that it could have resulted from disagreements within Obi’s own support base.
Ortom has not issued a statement clarifying his position on the 2027 elections or on the vehicle in question. Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
