The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) recently extended its congratulations to President Bola Tinubu on his assumed role as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). In a statement released on Sunday in Lagos, NACCIMA’s President, Mr. Dele Oye, conveyed his appreciation for Tinubu’s appointment, which took place during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc in Guinea Bissau.
Mr. Oye emphasized the significance of this appointment, particularly at a time when the ECOWAS region is actively preparing its member states for integration into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Given Nigeria’s status as the largest economy in Africa, he highlighted the country’s crucial role in both the region and the continent as a whole.
However, the NACCIMA president also acknowledged the existing challenges that hinder intra-West African trade. He specifically pointed out issues such as cumbersome procedures, high transportation costs, and corruption, which impede the free flow of goods and services within the region. These obstacles have severely hampered economic growth and prosperity for West Africans.
Recognizing President Tinubu’s credentials as an experienced politician and adept administrator, Mr. Oye expressed confidence in his ability to tackle these challenges head-on. He commended Tinubu’s track record in governance and leadership, stating that his wealth of experience and expertise would be instrumental in implementing policies that promote ease of doing business within the region.
NACCIMA pledged its unwavering support and commitment to collaborating with President Tinubu in his efforts to foster economic growth, trade, and investment in West Africa. The organization expressed optimism that under Tinubu’s leadership, the region would witness substantial progress and effective resolutions to the obstacles currently impeding intra-West African trade.
