NURTW South-West Zone Initiates Reconciliation Efforts, Aims to Regain Lost States
Chief Yemi Ogunfiade, an elder of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the South-West Zone, has revealed that the union is prepared to unite and reconcile with member states that previously withdrew. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, Ogunfiade emphasized the necessity of reconciliation, as the union had lost five out of six states in the South-West to Parks Management Committees. Consequently, the union has lost recognition in the zone he represents.
He further mentioned that a vote of no confidence had been passed on the National President of the union, Tajudeen Baruwa, by the elders and past leaders at the Southwest Zonal Headquarters in Osogbo. As a result, the union decided that Tajudeen Agbede should represent the zone and complete the remaining four years allocated to the southwest. Agbede has been nominated to represent the Southwest at the upcoming convention in August.
Ogunfiade appealed to the other five zones of the union across the country, urging forgiveness and assuring that all lost states would be regained and repositioned accordingly.
It is worth noting that the Lagos chapter of the union withdrew its membership from the national union following the indefinite suspension of Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, who served as chairman of the Lagos chapter. The suspension, attributed to alleged misconduct, insubordination, and incitement, led to Akinsanya announcing the withdrawal of the Lagos state chapter from the national body. He called on the state government to assume control of the parks and garages based on the 2004 white paper on Transport Union activities.
