The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON, mni, has announced plans by the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, to bolster defence cooperation with France in tackling terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities in Nigeria. This declaration was made during a meeting with members of the French Parliament and Defence Commission led by Gassilloud Thomas at Ship House, Abuja.
Highlighting the existing relationship between the two nations, Minister Abubakar emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation in military equipment, training, and other collaborative efforts. He underscored the significance of France’s potential support in providing equipment to combat insecurity and insurgency, recognizing Nigeria’s vast population and economic potential as pivotal factors for regional stability.
The Minister expressed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration between the French Parliament and its Nigerian counterpart, stressing the importance of such partnerships in enhancing security efforts.
In response, Mr. Gassiloud Thomas, head of the French Parliament delegation, lauded the Minister’s proactive approach to addressing security challenges in Nigeria. He assured continued support from the French government, expressing readiness to assist in various areas identified by the Minister to combat insecurity effectively.
Thomas emphasized the crucial role Nigeria plays in regional security and acknowledged the country’s efficient military capabilities, underscoring the importance of strengthening bilateral ties to address security concerns effectively.
The meeting signifies a concerted effort by both nations to foster closer cooperation in combating security threats, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
