Nigeria’s Power Generation Reaches 5,313MW, Highest in Three Years

By Milcah Tanimu

Nigeria’s power generation has surged to 5,313 megawatts, marking the highest level in three years, according to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Power. This peak, achieved on Monday, underscores a notable improvement in the national grid’s performance.

The Ministry’s media aide, Bolaji Tunji, emphasized that electricity distributors must ensure the efficient distribution of this increased energy output. Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu has urged distribution companies to absorb more of the generated power to prevent grid instability, as the grid’s frequency can drop when power is produced but not utilized by the Discos.

Adelabu also highlighted plans to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy to support this increased generation capacity. However, a senior official from one of the Discos expressed concerns about the financial viability of accepting additional power. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that the current tariff structure, particularly for bands other than Band A, does not cover operational costs, leading to financial losses.

On Saturday, power generation that peaked at 5,170MW was reduced by 1,400MW due to Discos’ rejection of excess energy.

In related news, the Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mutual Commitment Company Limited, a Chinese firm, to assemble electric tricycles and establish a renewable energy training center in Nigeria. The MoU was signed in Beijing, coinciding with the African-China Co-operation Summit.

Adelabu praised the MoU as a significant step toward achieving Nigeria’s renewable energy goals. He emphasized that both Nigeria and China face similar challenges related to energy access and job creation, making this partnership particularly valuable.

The minister also noted that President Bola Tinubu has prioritized the power sector as a key driver for economic growth. Adelabu stressed the need to move away from centralization in the power sector, advocating for a distributed energy model to improve energy access, particularly in rural areas and underserved institutions.

Nigeria’s current electrification rate stands at 62%, significantly behind other African nations such as Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa. Adelabu expressed confidence that the new initiatives will enhance the country’s electrification efforts, drive economic growth, and create jobs.

The Rural Electrification Agency’s Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, highlighted that the MoU aligns with the presidential mandate to build local capacity and generate employment. Mutual Commitment Company Limited is already involved in constructing power plants in Maiduguri and Kaduna, with plans to expand their efforts in Nigeria.

Yan Zhezhu, Vice Chairman of Mutual Commitment Company Limited, thanked the Nigerian government for its cooperation and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to contributing further to Nigeria’s energy sector development.

Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Board of National Credit Guarantee Company Limited (NCGC), has extended heartfelt felicitations to Muslims across Nigeria and around the world on the occasion of Eid El-Adha.

In his Eid message, Dogara described the festival as one of the most profound moments in the Islamic faith — a sacred season that embodies the enduring virtues of sacrifice, obedience, faith, and total devotion to God, as demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim (AS). He noted that beyond its spiritual significance, Eid El-Adha serves as a powerful reminder of the values of compassion, generosity, and love for humanity.

According to him, the celebration offers an opportunity for reflection and renewal, urging Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of unity, peace, and mutual understanding. He observed that the true essence of Eid lies not merely in celebration, but in the willingness to serve others selflessly and uplift the less privileged.

“Eid El-Adha reminds us that greatness is found in sacrifice, service, and compassion for one another. It is a season that calls us to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, extend kindness to those in need, and renew hope for a better and more united nation,” Dogara stated.

The former Speaker stressed that the lessons of Eid should transcend religious and ethnic boundaries, especially at a time when Nigeria needs collective commitment to peace, justice, and national cohesion. He called on citizens to rise above division and work together in the spirit of patriotism and shared destiny.

“As we celebrate this sacred festival, may the spirit of sacrifice inspire us to build bridges of understanding, promote harmony across our communities, and work collectively for a more peaceful, just, and prosperous Nigeria,” he added.

Dogara further prayed that the blessings of Eid El-Adha would bring joy to families, healing to communities, and progress to the nation. He encouraged the faithful to use the occasion as a time for spiritual renewal, deeper devotion to God, stronger family ties, and renewed commitment to the common good.

“As families gather in prayer and celebration, may this Eid remind us of our shared humanity and our collective responsibility to serve with humility, love, and sincerity. May the Almighty accept our prayers and sacrifices, bless our homes with peace and happiness, and guide our nation toward greater unity and prosperity,” he concluded.
