The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning that it might initiate an unannounced nationwide strike if petrol prices are increased while negotiations are still underway. Joe Ajaero, the NLC President, has expressed concern over the deteriorating value of the naira. This development followed speculations by oil marketers about a potential spike in petrol prices due to the strengthening of the dollar in the unofficial market. In the backdrop of the removal of fuel subsidies, the NLC had previously signaled strikes, but legal interventions prevented them. However, they still orchestrated nationwide protests on August 2, disrupting various economic sectors. Even though the government responded with legal actions against these labor leaders, a subsequent meeting between them aimed to ease the tensions. At a recent conference in Abuja, Ajaero criticized the government’s economic strategies and also called out the police for meddling in labor matters.
