NSSEC Lauds FG’s Education Policy

By Olufemi Oni, Ilorin

The Chairperson, Governing Board of the National Secondary Schools Education Commission (NSSEC), Ambassador Nimota Akanbi, has lauded the education policy of the federal government, saying it has helped in no small measure to improve the education of Nigerian students, particularly at the secondary school level.

Ambassador Akanbi, who particularly commended President Muhammadu Buhari, and the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, for their support to the commission since the inauguration of the Governing Board, gave the commendation in a statement at the end of a five-day capacity training workshop for teachers in English Language and Mathematics in the North Central geopolitical zone held in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The Chairperson, who also praised the federal government for making significant investments in the education sector, stressed that secondary school education lays the foundation for human development.

She opined that Nigeria needs the political will to address the unprecedented out of school children crisis, while lauding the Minister of Education for his efforts to reverse the ugly trend.

Ambassador Akanbi disclosed that education is too strategic and sensitive to be left in the hands of government alone, hence the need for Nigeria’s development partners to partner the federal government.

She observed that inauguration of the board has further improved the education standards of the pupils due to various workshops and training programmes being organised.

Ambassador Akanbi said the training of those teachers in English Language and Mathematics was an eye opener to the Commission, adding that “the task before the Commission is enormous, but we are working assiduously with stakeholders from all the geopolitical zones to resuscitate the Senior Secondary Education sub-sector in the country”.

She enjoined all education agencies and the 36 Governors of the federation as well as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to work together to ensure that the Mandate, Mission and Vision of the Commission, including the production of secondary school graduates with life skills and relevant academic qualifications for further studies, are achieved, adding that focus on education is an instrument of launching nations into the world of science and technology.

Ambassador Akanbi therefore called for proper funding from the three tiers of the government to make the sector produce the desired results which would stimulate national development.
