An Ilorin High Court trying the suspects in May 5, 2018 armed robbery attacks on commercial banks in Offa,Kwara state has admitted in evidence the medical examination report on the wounds allegedly inflicted on the suspects during the course of their interrogation by the police.

The medical examination was conducted by Dr Obiora Adunichukwu.

The suspects are Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, Salahudeen Azeez and Niyi Ogundiran.

At the resumed hearing of trial- within trial on Monday, Olaleye Paul Olasunkanmi, a medical doctor presented the medical examination report before the court.

Olasunkanmi who was in charge of medical welfare of inmates at Kwara state prisons command said that the instrument used in the hospital cannot tell the date that the injuries occurred during the cross examination..

He said the fracture seen on the X- ray film showed that the fracture was there in the past and was caused by metallic object.

” I am satisfied with the medical examination presented to court despite not being the author. The author followed due process which has provided answer to the needs of the court .

” I have informed the court that the date cannot be told by our instrument and the injuries are caused by trauma.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Barr. Yusuf Beki, Olasunkanmi told the court that the report doesn’t show that the wounds on the legs of the suspects were as a result of gunshots.

He testified that there is no place where gunshot was mentioned in the report.

In his response, the defence counsel, Barr. Mathias Emeribe, prayed the court to allow further examination of the cause of the wounds on the legs of the suspects by a ballistician .

He said since the court is after dispensing justice on the matter the assistance of the ballistician in the matter was necessary.

Responding, the prosecutor, Barr. Yusuf Beki said the submission of the defence counsel is not valid in the case and urged the court to discountenance it.

He said a ballistician cannot determine the cause of wounds, saying ballisticians don’t work in the hospital.

He added that ballisticians only determine the various forms of guns.

The trial judge, Justice Haleeman Salman, in his short ruling dismissed the submission of the defence counsel, saying that the Chief Medical Director of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has no authority to order a ballistic examination of the wounds on the suspects legs.

“This is outside the power of the CMD of UITH and I agree with this. This application is tantamount to attempts to delay the dispensation of this case. The application is hereby dismissed,” the Judge ruled.

During the continuation of proper hearing of the case after a short adjournment, the defence counsel further submitted that the combined effects of the prolonged detention of the accused spanning six months without arraignment “as facts can show is enough torture itself which goes against constitutional provisions.

” The implications of this weakens the accused emotionally; the prosecution cannot precisely tell when the accused were arrested or taken to Abuja. This leaves us with no option than to conclude that the prosecution was lying.

” There is no medical report to show that Michael Adikwu died of natural causes. This shows that the prosecution is lying. There is a consistent story line by the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and fifth accused that from the day of their arrest they have been under torture.

” In the light of this fact, is it difficult to conclude that whatever statement wherever it was obtained provided it occurred during the currency under the custody of the police was never voluntary. It was a statement that was given to stay alive.”

The defence counsel further argued that the contents of the medical report earlier tendered and admitted in evidence by the court ” gives credence to the story line that their (accused persons) confessional statement was obtained under duress and that is the crux of the matter that makes the admissibility of the confessional statements impossible. ”

Responding, the prosecutor, Barr. Beki said that the medical examination report showed that “the evidence of the prosecution witness in the trial- within- trial is credible, having not been discredited in any way. I urge the court to admit the evidence of prosecution witness.

” Metallic is not same as bullet pellet. The Doctor said that if it were to be gunshot despite being healed, it would have shown. We urge Your Lordship to admit these statements. ”

Justice Saleeman, however, adjourned ruling on the admissibility of the accused confessional statement to a later date. He also adjourned continuation of hearing to May 2, 2019.

The groups made the commendation in separate statements on the sidelines of a stakeholders’ engagement organised by the NCDC in Abuja.

The President of the Nigerian Youth Congress, Jethro Annum, and the NYCN State Chairman of Niger State, Ambassador Abdullahi Muhammed Ishaq, who spoke on behalf of the NYCN North Central Chairmen, described the NCDC as a catalyst for development.

They said the Commission’s 20-year development plan reflects the need for long-term planning and aligns with the broader development vision of President Tinubu for the country.

Similarly, the Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative (EUYI), in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Danesi Momoh, and the North Central Youth Mobilization and Sensitization (NOCYMS), led by Hon. The youth leaders described the initiative as timely and forward-looking, stressing that young people and students must remain an integral part of conversations about the future of the region.

“Students and young people are not only beneficiaries of development; we are also partners in building the future we desire. Any 20-year development plan for the North Central must therefore give serious attention to education, skills development, employment, entrepreneurship, technology and youth participation,” they said.

2027: Stay Off Imo State, Lawyers Warn Wike

Published

Imo Lawyers for the Defence of Democracy have called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to stop what it termed public attacks on Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, saying political disagreements should be resolved through democratic dialogue and constitutional means. The group made the call in a statement signed by its Secretary, Ifeoma Chukwunyere on Friday, September 18, 2026, amid what it described as increasingly personal exchanges between Wike and Uzodinma over political developments within the All Progressives Congress. The lawyers said the APC Governors’ Forum had rejected what they described as Wike’s “Rainbow Coalition” political arrangement, arguing that the disagreement should be addressed with the forum rather than through personal attacks on Uzodinma.According to the group, the forum’s position was based on concerns that the political arrangement could weaken the APC or create divided loyalty within the party.“We recognise the constitutional right of every Nigerian, including public officials and political actors, to express political opinions, criticise policies and participate in political activities,” the group said.“However, that freedom must not become a licence for personal attacks, intimidation or unnecessary escalation.”The lawyers said Uzodinma, as the governor of Imo State, should be allowed to discharge his responsibilities without political exchanges creating tension capable of affecting the peace and stability of the state. They urged Wike to desist from further public comments concerning the governor, insisting that political disagreements should focus on policies, programmes, political positions and verifiable facts rather than personal exchanges. The group also warned political actors against turning Imo State into a battleground for political supremacy.“Imo State is not a battlefield for political supremacy. Its people have the constitutional right to choose their leaders and determine their political future without undue interference, intimidation or external pressure,” it said. The lawyers further called on political parties, leaders, supporters and media platforms to avoid inflammatory language that could provoke confrontation. They urged Uzodinma to continue to operate within the Constitution and the laws of the country, while allowing relevant political and legal institutions to handle legitimate disagreements. The group also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to encourage restraint among political actors, particularly in relation to the dispute between Wike and Uzodinma.Addressing Wike directly, the lawyers said: “Mr. Minister, Imo State belongs to its people. You are not from Imo, so stay off Imo.”They stressed that disagreements over political strategies, elections, alliances and political actors in the state should be settled through democratic debate and constitutional processes. The group said it would continue to monitor developments affecting constitutional governance, democratic participation, political freedom and peace in Imo State.“Our position is simple: Democracy must prevail. The Constitution must prevail. The rule of law must prevail,” the statement added.
