Protection of child’s right: Jurist seeks enforcement of enabling laws

A retired Grand Khadi, Kwara State Shariah Court of Appeal, Ilorin, Justice Salihu Olohuntoyin Muhammad has advocated enforcement of enabling laws to protect the right of children to secure their future.

Justice Olohuntoyin Muhammad made this call while presenting a paper entitled ” Custody, Adoption, Guardianship and Fosterage under Islamic Law” at the ongoing Ramadan Lecture series organised by Islamic Missionaries Association of Nigeria, held at IMAN Centre new Yidi Road, Ilorin.

According to him, the law makes adequate provision to safeguard proper upbringing of the children ranging from quality education to healthcare.

He solicited fair treatment of orphans to guard against child labour and other forms of abuses in the society.

The jurist stressed the need for guardians to desist from misappropriation of orphan’s property to save them from Allah’s punishment.

Justice Olohuntoyin Muhammad who is also an Islamic Law Consultant, said child’ s guardian must be able to look after the child, free from immorality, vices and infectious diseases to enable the child secure better tomorrow.

He therefore advised orphan’s guardians to be honest with the child’s property to enable them earn Allah’s mercy both on earth and thereafter.
