The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has announced plans to petition the Nigerian Judicial Council (NJC) to seek sanctions against Justice M.W. Danagogo. This comes after the judge granted an ex-parte motion, preventing the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, from accessing the State Assembly premises.
The High Court in Port Harcourt had confirmed Edison Ehie as the authentic speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly in a ruling on Tuesday. The court restrained Amaewhule and Dumle Maol, allies of former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, from interfering with the activities of Edison Ogerenye Ehie as the speaker.
In response to the ruling, the acting chairman of the APC in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, stated that the party would not comply with the court order. Okocha revealed that the APC intends to write to the Nigerian Judicial Council, seeking sanctions against Justice Danagogo for granting the ex-parte order.
He described the order as a “fragrant abuse of court processes” and emphasized that the APC, with an overwhelming majority in the house, will not tolerate intimidation, harassment, or threats against its members. Okocha concluded that the party would not allow illegality to stand, considering the court order as procured and expressing the intention to petition Justice Danagogo to the NJC if the judge does not reverse himself immediately.
