Security guard bags 9 months imprisonment for stealing iron rod

A Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old security guard, Barnabas Yakubu to nine months imprisonment for stealing iron rods worth N330,000.

Yakubu of Dawaki Abuja was sentenced on a count charge of theft.

He, however, pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.

The Judge, Sulyman Ola, however, gave Yakubu an option of N30,000 fine and also warned him to be of good behaviour.

The Prosecutor, Mr Chinedu Ogada told the court that the convict committed the offence on July 13.

Ogada said that the Complainant, Ike Ifeanyi, of Apo Resettlement, Apo, Abuja, reported the matter at Dawaki Police Station on July 13.

He told the court that the convict criminally went into the complainant’s building, under construction, at Dawaki without his consent and stole the iron rods worth N330,000 and escaped.

He was trailed, caught and handed over to the police for proper investigation.

The prosecutor added that during police investigation, the convict made a confessional statement and efforts to recover the iron rods prove abortive.

He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.
