Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent spate of boat accidents in various parts of the country, resulting in the tragic loss of many lives.
In response to the incidents in Adamawa and Niger States, Speaker Abbas has called for a collaborative effort between the government and boat operators to enhance safety on Nigeria’s waterways.
Tragedy struck on Friday night when a boat capsized at Njuwa Lake in Rugange Village, Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State, claiming several lives. On Sunday, another boat carrying over 100 passengers in Mokwa LGA of Niger State capsized, resulting in the tragic loss of 30 lives. Additionally, on Monday, a boat accident occurred in Kwatan Mallam Adamu, Gurin Village, Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, claiming the lives of over 10 individuals.
Speaker Abbas expressed his concern about the increasing number of mishaps in water transportation, which serves as an essential alternative to road and rail for the movement of people and goods. He emphasized the need for a thorough review of operational standards and urged strict adherence to safety measures by both boat operators and passengers.
While extending his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the affected communities, and the governments of Niger and Adamawa States, Speaker Abbas also offered prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives in these unfortunate incidents.
