Thugs Sack Edo Community

Published

By Monday EBALU, Benin City
Properties valued at about N40million such as luxury cars, houses and personal effects were last week destroyed when armed thugs wielding axes and shot guns allegedly invaded the Ogheghe-Osewende community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Council of Edo state.
Although no life was lost, many community dwellers said many of them lost valuables which the thugs stole as others sustained life-threatening wounds while others like two aged women who were home when the incident occurred are still on danger list from the attacks, at an undisclosed private clinic.
One of them told nationalTRAIL that the thugs, who were led by one ‘Yellowman’, from the neighboring Amagba community, came in different vehicles to the quiet community in search of the Youth leader, Comrade Daniel Omoregbe, who they accused of misappropriating a disputed land to Ogheghe-Osewende.
But contacted, Comrade Omoregbe said the land in question was not in dispute as the Ogheghe-Osewende community had secured a ruling in its favour against Uhue community, who were laying claims to it, from the Supreme Court of the then Western region sitting at Ibadan in 1942.
He said Ogheghe-Osewende community has secured several other court rulings over the land in question, in its favour, against the Uhue community including one from the Palace of the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa in 2012, another from the Edo state assembly in 2015, amongst others.
Omoregbe, who said his community which is now deserted lost properties and cash amountsing to N40m after the dastardly attack, listed 4 of his personal vehicles including a Toyota Highlander, a Peugeot 307, Mercedes Benz C class 320 and a Ford Bus which were destroyed by the thugs.
Displaying pictures of the destruction, he said, “The thugs were led by Yellowman who said he is untouchable. He demolished several windows in my house while my wife who is pregnant and is a nursing mother as well as my son was inside…my borehole and generator shed was vandalized in the process”.
He said that. “Our lives in the community are in danger. We have asked the Police to move in and protect us; although the DPO has sent his men on regular patrol many of my people have not returned to their houses since the invasion as they are afraid that the thugs may return”.
Other community dwellers said besides the destruction in the home of the Youth leader, the thugs who began by going to the palace of the traditional ruler HRH Michael Ogbonwan, drove him and his household into the nearby forest by shooting sporadically before ransacking adjourning houses, demolishing doors and windows and assorted vehicles in the process.
It was however gathered that the Divisional Police Officer in New Etete near Benin City was on top of the situation as some arrests have been made, while some policemen have been deployed to regularly patrol the community to forestall a re-occurrence of the episode

What MKA Will Do Differently

Published

  1. Open rural roads to allow faster and deeper security response, while also improving the movement of agricultural products. The current government has focused on cosmetic projects that do not reflect the current challenges and realities of the state. The rural areas are the most hard hit by this terror and my government will focus on providing a targeted and holistic responses .
  2. To ensure deterrence, I will set up a committee of experienced legal minds to monitor and follow up the prosecution of criminals arrested by the police. I will also work with the State Assembly to further strengthen our anti-crime laws.
  3. Improve security intelligence by deepening collaboration with the clergy, traditional rulers, neighbouring states, and security agencies. I will also improve surveillance by building a command centre capable of 24-hour remote monitoring of critical and volatile areas of the state. The current government of Abia State under Alex Otti has delivered one such project with great results.
  4. Payment of salaries should not be a yardstick for measuring good governance. Salaries are simply workers’ entitlements for services rendered. To promote transparency, I will publish a public salary website showing the monthly status of salary payments.
  5. I will set up a committee tasked with ensuring Benue youths are fairly represented in federal government job recruitment exercises.
  6. In the area of sports, I will build astroturf football pitches across the state to encourage youth participation in sports. Additionally entrepreneurs will receive grants and low interest loans to grow.
  7. Agriculture is a business, and our farmers will be equipped with the training and infrastructure needed to carry out commercial farming. I will deploy my experience of running a rice factory over the last 10 years to transform agriculture into a profitable enterprise.
  8. Global cities are also entertaining cities. Benue has a large pool of talented entertainers, and I will set up an Entertainment Advisory Board to promote talent and grow the entertainment industry in the state.
