In a distressing incident, gunmen attacked Dungwel village in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday evening, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least four individuals. Shedrack Gambo, a relative of the victims, revealed that others sustained injuries during the attack, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Confirming the incident, Captain Oya James, spokesman for the Military Taskforce, reported that the assailants seemed to have a specific target in mind, particularly the village head. On their arrival, the attackers inquired about the house of the village head, prompting residents to flee upon realizing the gravity of the situation.
The assailants went on to burn the house of the village head, trapping family members inside. The timely intervention of the military troops, alerted to the scene, prevented further casualties. The troops rescued the victims, including the wives and children of the village head, who were trapped in the burning house.
James emphasized the critical role played by the soldiers in breaking into the engulfed house to save the lives of the trapped individuals. The incident underscores the persistent security challenges faced by communities in Plateau State and the urgent need for enhanced measures to address and prevent such attacks.
The community is now grappling with the aftermath of the tragic event, and authorities are likely to launch investigations to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice for the victims.
