The Ebonyi State Police Command provided details on Monday regarding the unfortunate death of Ayogu Evans, a 300-level student of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), who lost his life in a road crash while reportedly being chased by police officers on Saturday, December 2.
As stated by the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Evans was flagged for a routine “stop and search” at a checkpoint along Nkaliki Road in Abakaliki, the state capital. However, the EBSU student accelerated and fled the scene, leading to a pursuit by police officers. The tragic incident culminated in a fatal car crash.
Evans, a Sociology student, was rushed to the hospital by passersby after the accident but succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
An anonymous source revealed, “The people who brought him to the hospital confirmed that he was being chased by the police when he suddenly had an accident, and that the police officers that were chasing him ran away after he had the accident. They later came back to move his wrecked car to their station at Liberation Estate.”
The police statement explained the sequence of events, noting that the driver’s actions raised suspicion, prompting the pursuit by police operatives. The pursuit ended tragically when Evans was involved in an accident along Oriuzor Road. Despite efforts by traffic officers and concerned citizens, the student could not be saved.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Augustina Ogbodo, addressed student leaders, assuring them that the concerns raised would be thoroughly investigated. The commissioner urged citizens to support the police in carrying out their duties and encouraged reporting any unprofessional conduct by police officers on duty. She assured the public that disciplinary actions would be taken against any erring police officer.
