Why L G Elections May Not Hold In Borno

While potential chairmanship and councillorship aspirants have commenced lobbying ahead of the planned Local Government elections slated for next month in Borno state, indications have emerged that, the elections may have been put on hold due to logistics and emergent issues in the preparations .
Although the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission BOSIEC, has not officially announced the development, there are strong indications that, Local Government elections, earlier scheduled to hold across the 27 Local Government Areas of Borno state next month, may not hold again.
National Trail gathered that logistics for the elections and other emergent issues in the aftermath of the last general elections, have put the elections in doubt.
Sources at BOSIEC confirmed to our correspondent that too much pressures on the resources needed for the conduct of the elections may be one of the reasons for the pastponment.
Our correspondent reports that, the reality on ground does not favour the conduct of the Local Government elections, as most political players are still smarting from the pressures and attendant hangovers of the general elections.
Unofficial sources told national Trail in Maiduguri, that, the electoral umpire may be constrained to shift the elections to allow for better preparations and to fully comply with the extant laws guarding the conduct of Local Government elections.
With the expiration of the tenures of Transition Committee Chairmen in sight on June 29, sources from the Government confirmed that, the state Government may be compelled to name another set of Transition Committee Chairmen and Councillors, or extend the tenures of the existing ones by another six months, in compliance with the law.
While political parties await the official announcement of the shift in the date of the elections, the political atmosphere seems relaxed, with most politicians agreeing with the shift in the date.
Investigations at the offices of the two leading political parties, the APC and the PDP reveal that, the parties are also overstretched and are favorably disposed to a shift in the election time table.
Coupled with the preparations for the swearing in of the Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum and his Deputy on May 29th and the consequent plans for Democracy Day celebrations on June 12, our correspondent reports that, the timing for the elections may have been choked up and the electoral body in Borno may be left with no option than to shift the elections by another six month, beginning from June 29, 2023.
