Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, the wife of Gabon’s ousted President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who had been under house arrest following the coup in late August in the Central African nation, has been imprisoned, as confirmed by her lawyer on Thursday.

Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, who is suspected of embezzling public funds, was incarcerated late on Wednesday, with her lawyer, Francois Zimeray, decrying the “arbitrary and unlawful process.”

On September 28, Bongo’s wife was charged with offenses including money laundering, forgery, and falsification of records.

The military has accused the former head of state and his inner circle of manipulating election results and openly alleged that his wife had been controlling him since he suffered a severe stroke in 2018.
