“Wike alleges that corn sellers contribute to Abuja’s insecurity.”

The Federal Capital Territory’s Minister, Nyesom Wike, has banned street vending in Abuja, citing street traders, including corn sellers, as contributors to the city’s criminal activities and instability.

During a discussion with officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration and Federal Capital Development Authority, the ex-governor of Rivers State emphasized the need for rectitude. He expressed concern about the prevalent darkness in most parts of Abuja, urging immediate action to restore light.

Stressing on the city’s cleanliness, Wike mandated a swift cleanup and warned sanitation officials of unexpected check-ins. He expressed his readiness to replace any official failing to uphold the cleanliness standard. Moreover, he declared the prohibition of motor parks in unauthorized locations.

Wike added, “Street trading will not be allowed. Corn sellers often litter, creating an environment conducive for criminals who masquerade as buyers to scout and relay information to their cohorts. We must rid the streets of hawkers.”

Highlighting the issue of unauthorized constructions, he said, “There’s a pressing need to address the rampant illegal structures. All unauthorized buildings, irrespective of the owner’s status, will face demolition.”
