Xabi Alonso, long rumored to be Liverpool’s top managerial target, has announced his decision to remain as coach of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming season.

Speaking at a press conference, Alonso addressed the speculation surrounding his future, stating, “It’s been a season of speculation regarding my future.” He confirmed that after reflecting during the international break, he informed Leverkusen’s directors of his decision to continue coaching the team.

Liverpool had announced Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure at the end of the season, fueling speculation that Alonso could potentially replace him. However, Alonso quickly dismissed such rumors.

The 42-year-old Spaniard expressed his belief that Leverkusen is the ideal environment for his coaching development, emphasizing the support and respect he receives from the club’s management.

Alonso’s decision comes amidst Leverkusen’s impressive season, where they are on course for a treble, including a potential German league title. Leverkusen currently sits atop the Bundesliga table, unbeaten with 34 victories and four draws.

Despite links to other top clubs, including Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, Alonso has opted to remain with Leverkusen, where he has made a significant impact since his appointment in 2022.

As a player, Alonso enjoyed success in England, Germany, and Spain, winning numerous titles including the Champions League twice. His coaching career has also shown promise, with Leverkusen benefiting from his natural talent on the sidelines.

While speculation may have surrounded Alonso’s potential move to Liverpool, his commitment to Leverkusen reaffirms his dedication to the club’s ongoing success.
