‘You’re Only Sending Them to a Death Sentence’ – Uba Sani Criticises Ban on Live Weapons for Amotekun, Vigilantes
By: Fabian Apechihin
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has criticised the prohibition on the use of live weapons by Amotekun corps and other vigilante groups, arguing that the creation of state police remains the most effective solution to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday, the governor said local security outfits cannot effectively confront armed criminals if they are denied access to appropriate weapons.
According to Sani, deploying unarmed or lightly armed vigilante personnel against heavily armed criminals amounts to sending them “to a death sentence.”
“I don’t think there is anyone who has come up with a lasting solution to the issue of insecurity in Nigeria,” he said. “I’ve heard many opinions, but the only sustainable solution is the creation of state police.”
The governor argued that although many state governments have established vigilante organisations, including the South-West’s Amotekun Corps, their effectiveness is limited by legal restrictions on the use of firearms.
“Today, virtually every state has one form of vigilante service. But many people have not carefully looked at the relevant laws. They prohibit vigilante services from carrying live weapons. So, when you have Amotekun and other vigilante groups without the means to defend themselves, you are only sending them to a death sentence because they cannot be effective,” he said.
Sani also cited the shortage of security personnel across the country as another reason Nigeria should adopt state policing.
According to him, Nigeria has fewer than 400,000 police officers and fewer than 250,000 military personnel serving a population of about 230 million people, a figure he said falls below globally accepted security benchmarks.
“We have less than 400,000 police personnel and fewer than 250,000 military personnel in a country of over 230 million people. The global best practice is about one security officer to every 450 citizens, and we have not met that standard,” he stated.
The governor further lamented the existence of vast ungoverned areas across the country, particularly in the North, where security presence is often minimal.
“We have many ungoverned spaces in Nigeria. That is why you can travel from one point to another, especially in the North, without seeing any security personnel,” he said.
Reiterating his support for state policing, Sani argued that countries operating true federal systems generally empower sub-national governments with their own police forces.
“I cannot remember any country that practises true federalism without state police. Why should Nigeria be different if we claim to be practising federalism?” he asked.
