Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has reached out to the international community, seeking support for those affected by Boko Haram attacks and guidance on handling rehabilitated insurgents. He presented his case at the University of Oxford, UK, during a four-day retreat intended to amplify Borno State’s peace initiatives by garnering international backing.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Isa Gusau, on Thursday, details were provided about the retreat taking place from September 13 to 16, 2023, at the University of Oxford. Titled “Strengthening the Borno Model”, the retreat emphasizes both the successes and limitations of Borno’s strategies in facilitating Boko Haram fighters’ defection.

Organized by the UK-based charity, Inter Mediate, which is dedicated to ending global armed conflicts, the event focuses on creating actionable plans for transitional justice and strategic communication, aligning the Borno Model with Nigeria’s broader peace plan.

The UK’s High Commission in Nigeria is supporting the event. Upon his UK arrival, Governor Zulum was welcomed at the University of Oxford’s inaugural college by Baroness Valerie Amos.

On the following day, Zulum shared insights through a presentation discussing the future vision, achievements, and challenges of the Borno Model. The retreat also encompassed discussions about integrating the Borno Model into a broader Nigerian and regional peace strategy.

The outcomes of the retreat will include a comprehensive communication strategy and a legal foundation for transitional justice, accompanied by a 100-day action plan. Attendees of the retreat include representatives from the Nigerian federal government, the military, the UK High Commission, and expert consultants.
