The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has responded to the defection of some of its members to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that it does not view their departure as a significant loss.
In a press release signed by Abraham Amah, the Vice Chairman/acting Publicity Secretary, the Abia PDP expressed that the defectors recognized their diminishing relevance within the party, leading to their decision to leave.
Moreover, the party revealed that a substantial number of those defecting were accountable for the “brief downturn” experienced by the PDP during the 2023 elections in Abia.
Amah emphasized that the party is unperturbed by the recent defections, highlighting that it has received numerous applications from individuals eager to join its ranks in Abia. He suggested that the defections could be perceived as a positive development, signaling an opportunity for the party’s rejuvenation.
“After conducting a thorough post-mortem following the 2023 general elections, the Abia PDP concluded that reinventing itself for the future necessitated shedding weight. This was not through expulsions but rather through voluntary exits of those responsible for the party’s temporary setback,” the statement read.
The party expressed gratitude for the departure of these individuals, asserting that their recognition of their waning influence within the party is appreciated.
Notably, the recent defections saw prominent figures such as former Chief of Staff to ex-governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Anthony Agbazuere, and former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Eze Chikanmayo, among others, making the switch to the APC, causing ripples in the Abia political landscape.
