Victor Boniface, the Nigerian striker, has made a splash since joining Bayer Leverkusen, securing a nomination for the Bundesliga Player of The Month award for 2023/24’s early stages.
He’s up against big names like Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies, as well as Union Berlin’s Kevin Behrens. Wolfsburg’s Jonas Wind and Leipzig’s Benjamin Henrichs are also in the race.
After transferring from Union Saint-Gilloise, a Belgian outfit, this summer, Boniface has netted four times and provided two assists in just three Bundesliga outings.
Not only did he score twice in the recent matchday, but one of his goals made the Bundesliga’s top five for that week. At just 22, the forward’s Bundesliga form has earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and a nomination for the Rookie of the Month.
His stellar performance on matchday 3 earned him a 9.7 rating on Whoscored, placing him second among Europe’s elite leagues. That day, he scored twice and assisted in Bayer Leverkusen’s resounding 5-1 victory over Darmstadt.
His prowess hasn’t gone unnoticed. Koln’s coach Steffen Baumgart stated he’d have chosen Boniface over Kane if he led Bayern Munich. German World Cup champion, Lothar Matthäus, even sees Boniface vying with Kane for the top scorer title this season.
