A Federal High Court in Borno has issued an order for the release of 313 individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism-related offenses. The court reached this decision due to insufficient evidence to prosecute the suspects after completing the investigation process.
Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this announcement during a briefing on military operations nationwide in Abuja. He assured that the military would adhere to the court order and hand over the suspected terrorists to the Borno State government.
The court’s ruling followed prosecutions conducted by the Department of Prosecution, Federal Ministry of Justice. Upon release, the suspects will be transferred to the Borno State Government for further action.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first instance where suspected terrorists have been acquitted due to a lack of evidence. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, previously reported that out of 1,323 suspects prosecuted for terrorism, only 366 convictions were secured. Additionally, 896 individuals were discharged due to insufficient evidence.
Fagbemi emphasized the importance of sustaining efforts in prosecuting terrorism-related cases to ensure the safety and well-being of the country and its people.
