Following the Super Eagles’ defeat against the Eagles of Mali in an international friendly match held in Marrakech, Morocco, interim coach Finidi George has shed light on the reasons behind the loss.
The Super Eagles faced a 2-0 setback against Mali, with George pointing to costly errors as the primary cause for the defeat.
George, who also coaches Enyimba, expressed disappointment over missed opportunities during the game but commended his team for their overall strong performance.
“It wasn’t a poor performance overall. The intensity was good, and we created several scoring opportunities. However, our inability to convert those chances and the mistakes we made proved costly. In matches like this, if you fail to capitalize on your chances and make errors, you’ll pay the price. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to us,” George remarked.
Reflecting on the team’s performance in the previous match, George acknowledged their commendable efforts despite the unfavorable outcome.
“Our performance in the first game was commendable as well. While I would have preferred a different result, I must commend the players for their dedication and effort on the field,” George added.
With the friendly behind them, the Super Eagles will now turn their focus to the upcoming June 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, aiming to bounce back from their recent loss and secure positive results in the qualifiers.
