Abubakar Gambo, a Director of Administration and General Services (DAGS) in the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, aged 49, has been apprehended by the police in Kano, along with two accomplices. The trio faces charges related to the vandalism and criminal misappropriation of high-capacity irrigation scheme equipment owned by the state government.
According to a statement by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, as conveyed by Police spokesperson Superintendent Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Abubakar, along with his accomplices, conspired and forged a letter authorizing the auction of critical public utility equipment, including high-capacity Water Irrigation Pump and Tank. The auction was conducted without the proper consent of the supervising ministry.
The statement revealed that Abubakar was arrested at Karefa Water Irrigation Scheme in Tudun Wada Local Government Area. The two other individuals, Baba Yahaya (Assistant Secretary, Administration) and Nuhu Mansur (former Manager of Karefa Water Irrigation Scheme), were also apprehended. Police recovered the exhibits related to the crime.
The investigation revealed that the suspects admitted to jointly committing the offense and selling the government property at the rate of N500,000. The proceeds of the crime, amounting to N500,000, were recovered from Abubakar Gambo. The case is set to be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police commended the public for their support in identifying criminal elements and urged everyone to consider government property as collective responsibility to safeguard. He also expressed gratitude for the continuous support, encouragement, and cooperation from the people of the state. The Commissioner encouraged the public to report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through designated emergency contact numbers and online platforms.
