“Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Official Arrested for Ticket Racketeering in Lagos

An official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has been arrested for alleged involvement in ticket racketeering at the Ebute Metta Train Station in Lagos. The arrest followed protests by stranded passengers who expressed displeasure over the alleged racketeering. The passengers called on the Federal Government to address the issue. The arrest comes after President Bola Tinubu announced waivers on transport fares for interstate road travelers during the Christmas and New Year period. The federal government had pledged to bear 50% of transport fares for interstate road travelers and provide free train rides nationwide from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. The arrested official is expected to face charges related to the alleged ticket racketeering.”

In a related development, the Federal Government has reported that approximately 163,878 Nigerians benefited from the transportation rebate introduced in December 2023. During the period from December 21 to 31, 2023, the Nigerian Railway Corporation transported 71,000 passengers, while luxury buses carried 77,122 travelers. The subsidy program aimed to provide relief to travelers during the festive season.
