The Labour Party (LP) has expressed dissatisfaction with the ministerial list President Bola Tinubu submitted to the National Assembly, which was unveiled on Thursday. The list of 28 nominees, including notable figures like Abubakar Momoh, Yusuf Tuggar, and Nasir El-Rufai, was delivered by the Chief of Staff to the President and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajiabiamila.
LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, stated that the list fell far short of Nigerian expectations. The party voiced concern over the staggered presentation of the ministerial list and plans to consult on the legality of this approach compared to the required submission of a full list as per the Electoral Act.
The LP commented on the lack of quality, dynamic, and results-oriented individuals in the list, criticizing the repetition of politicians who failed in the past and contributed to Nigeria’s current state. The party also lamented the absence of technocrats who would usually drive policy implementation.
LP added that the law requires the ministerial list to be submitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation within 60 days of a government’s commencement. However, the current list was hastily assembled and excluded nominees from around ten states, a clear violation of the law.
The LP will seek legal advice on the legality of the list’s piecemeal submission. The party asserts that Nigeria needs energetic, innovative individuals with proven track records to tackle the country’s numerous challenges.
