Pope Francis to undergo abdominal hernia surgery on Wednesday, Vatican announces.Following the abdominal hernia surgery, the 86-year-old Pope Francis is expected to have a hospital stay of “several days.”Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni revealed that the Pope’s hernia is causing recurring and worsening symptoms. As a result, Pope Francis underwent clinical tests at Gemelli hospital in Rome on Tuesday before his scheduled surgery on Wednesday. The surgery, a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery, was performed under general anesthesia. The Vatican stated that the Pope’s hospital stay would last several days for a normal post-operative course and full functional recovery. This follows the Pope’s previous surgery at Gemelli hospital last year to address diverticulitis, an inflammation of the intestine lining.In addition to his recent hernia surgery, Pope Francis had previously been hospitalized for bronchitis in late March. He received treatment with antibiotics and stayed in the hospital for three nights. The treatment was successful, and he made a full recovery from the bronchitis episode.
