The Cement Company of Northern Nigeria PLC (CCNN) has awarded scholarship to 15 indigenes of host communities studying various courses in tertiary institutions across the country, just as the company donated 140 tons (2,800 bags) of cement to 68 host communities.
Speaking while launching the scholarship awards at the Wamakko Local Government Secretariat, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the company, Malam Ibrahim Aminu, said that the ceremony was historic and a landmark in the relationship between CCNN and host communities.
He recalled that CCNN has been running a school, the Sokoto Cement Schools in the state capital which has developed over the years into one of the best schools in Sokoto State.
He observed that the launching of the scholarship awards was “taking a giant step in the educational development of our host communities”.
According to him, the students who would each receive N100, 000.00 annually throughout the duration of their studies, were nominated by the communities, screened by the company and found suitable for the awards.
The breakdown included two MBBS (human medicine), one veterinary medicine, two Bsc Botany, two Bsc Education/Biology and one Quantity Survey.
Others are Bsc Microbiology, B. Eng Electrical, three Computer Science (ND &NICE), one Bsc Physics and one Office Management.
He described the beneficiaries as potential leaders and urged them to justify the expenses on them.
He stated that the cement presentation was an annual donation to the host communities to enable them renovate and repair communal facilities before the onset of the raining season.
He expressed the hope that the cement would be used for the intended purpose.
In his speech, the Chairman of Wamakko local government council, Alhaji Ahmed Abdullahi Kalambaina, commended CCNN for living up to its corporate responsibility even in these difficult economic times and appealed to similar organisations to follow suit.
