The Enugu State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed an application aimed at preventing the swearing-in of Governor-elect Peter Mbah on May 29, 2023. Nnamdi Omeje, the African Democratic Party candidate, and his party contested the outcome of the March 18 governorship election, which declared Peter Mba of the Peoples Democratic Party as the winner. Omeje and his party alleged instances of intimidation, overvoting, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC election guidelines during the election.
Consequently, the petition was filed with the Enugu State High Court Complex to contest the election.
One of the requests made in the petition was to halt the upcoming inauguration and/or swearing-in of Peter Mbah as the incoming Executive Governor of Enugu State.
The petitioners, through a motion, urged the tribunal to issue an interlocutory injunction restraining Mbah from presenting himself for the purpose of being sworn in or inaugurated as the Executive Governor of Enugu State on May 29, 2023.
However, on Tuesday, the tribunal ruled on the motion and dismissed the application, citing a lack of merit.
